Sexual Violence in the IDD Community

Sexual Violence Prevention Project

What is the Sexual Violence Prevention Project?

The Arc of New Jersey has made taking action against sexual violence against people with IDD a priority. While it can be hard to face its painful and prevalent reality, people with IDD are seven times more likely to be subjected to sexual assault than people without IDD. We therefore have an obligation as family members, self-advocates, and professionals to champion this tough issue to ensure the health and safety of our community.

The Sexual Violence Prevention Project approaches this challenge with a focus on awareness, policy, and education. We are committed to examining the issue and providing real solutions to preventing future sexual violence and redressing the abuse of the past.
