CJAP Webinar Series # 1 Exploring a Closer Look: Case Studies - An Analysis of Dual Diagnosis in Adults with Mental Illness and Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
According to National Core Indicators data (NCI), the prevalence of dual diagnoses of mental illness and intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) ranges up from 40% to upwards of 70%. Individuals with this comorbidity may face several obstacles and barriers throughout their lifespan regarding access to integrated and comprehensive treatment, housing, involvement in the criminal justice system, and many more. In the state of New Jersey, there are distinct and defined social services for both, mental health and IDD, however, what are the implications of having both diagnoses?
Mariam Spall, MSW, the Assistant Director of Medallion Care Behavioral Health Services, will be discussing case studies of individuals with dual diagnoses. The case reviews will address the multifaceted and complex factors one with mental illness and IDD experience, while also identifying the interventions and supports that provided the necessary assistance to advocate and assist the individual along the way to ensure the individual receives the most appropriate care. This discussion will review symptomology, diagnostic concerns, as well as treatment specificities of those with dual diagnoses.
