Webinar: Exploring a Closer Look: Excessive Sugar Consumption and Criminality: A Neurocriminological, Clinical, and Forensic Perspective

Thursday, May 25, 2023
2:30 pm3:30 pm

Excessive sugar consumption is a threat to human health and may contribute to adverse emotional, behavioral, cognitive, and physical health consequences. Research has also found that excessive sugar consumption may play a role in externalizing behavioral problems (e.g., aggression and impulsivity), including criminality. Designed for professionals, this training provides attendees with an overview of excessive sugar consumption and its related causes and consequences through a neurocriminological, clinical, and forensic lens. Implications for screening and intervention will also be discussed during this training. Other relevant topics of interest discussed include blood sugar dysregulation (e.g., hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia), central nervous system dysfunction, chronic stress and adverse life experiences, neurocognitive impairments, criminal recidivism and offender reentry, prenatal sugar consumption and the first 1,000 days of life research, hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis dysfunction, microbiota-gut-brain axis dysfunction, negative emotionality, risk-taking behaviors, self-control deficits, and the western diet among others. Empirically based research findings and case studies will be discussed throughout this training.
